There are thousands of gay-affirming congregations scattered throughout the United States and reaching out to all corners of the world and the numbers are growing day by day. Phrases such as Open and Affirming, Reconciled in Christ, More Light, and Reconciling are just a few of the ways in which congregations located within particular Christian denominations identify themselves as places of welcome for GLBTQ people but what it actually means to be a gay-affirming faith community varies from congregation to congregation and from denomination to denomination around issues ranging from the ordination of GLBTQ clergy to the recognition of same-sex unions. Many mainstream Christian denominations have an organization, officially or unofficially recognized, committed to the concerns of GLBTQ people within their faith tradition as well as to justice issues affecting GLBTQ people around the world. Nearly all these GLBTQ organizations have developed extensive websites that offer a wealth of resources including an up to date roster of gay-affirming congregations within their denomination. If a congregation is listed on one of these websites you can be assured that congregation is a safe and welcoming place for you.
This website no longer provides a multi-denominational directory of gay-affirming congregations by region because while we believe it’s essential to find a congregation that welcomes you fully into the life and ministry of their community regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, there’s more to consider when search for a church home. A directory of independent GLBT-affirming congregations is provided below. For this reason we encourage anyone looking for a church home to spend time investigating the various denominational websites where you will not only find the most up to date roster of gay-affirming congregations available but where you can gain additional information on the theology, priorities, and mission of each denomination so you might connect with one that is both compatible and challenging to your own spiritual journey.
