Mystery Photo Contest
October 1, 2008
We have a winner! See below.
While I’m fully aware it was only last night I told you I wouldn’t be blogging for the rest of the week, I now officially retract that statement because I’m in the mood for fun!
The first person who correctly guesses what the mystery photo is will win a set of Queer Christian Classics for their home library, including:
.
- Gifted by Otherness: Gay and Lesbian Christians in the Church, by L. William Countryman and M.R. Ritley
- What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality, by Daniel A. Helminiak, Ph.D.
- The New Testament and Homosexuality, by Robin Scroggs, and last but not least,
- Jonathan Loved David: Homosexuality in Biblical Times, by Tom Horner (This little book is out of print and currently going for 22.00 on Amazon)
But that’s not all! The lucky winner will also receive Isabel Miller’s Patience and Sarah, a tender novel about two women in love in the 1800′s.
But wait, there’s more! The winning entry will also receive a bonus mystery surprise, so hurry up and submit your guess here!

Hm. I have all those books, except the last one.

A walkway
October 1st, 2008 at 8:55 pm
How about one guess for me and one for my partner?
My partner guesses concrete blocks like on a walkway using fish eye or barrel distortion lens (she takes pictures – I don’t!)
I guess cement stairs with the picture rotated
I don’t have any of the books!

October 1st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Stephanie–>That would be a walkway to nowhere. Steeeeeeeeeeeeerike 3!
Karen–>The couple that guesses together, loses together.
Tiffany–>Sorry, we have curtains.
e2tc–>Two wild and wrong guesses.
e2tc–>Chair? Bench? No. No.
Ripley–>She swings and hits air!

Is it matches in a match book?

Inside of a piano
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:25 am
I got a fever and can’t think. I also don’t have the books and I will be officially old in 15 days. My favorite 10 year old told me so. No wild guesses from me. I give up.
October 2nd, 2008 at 4:29 am
how about some sort of air vent???
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:55 am
tiles?
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:56 am
The tines on a grass rake?
October 2nd, 2008 at 6:10 am
The frames of those poster holding thingees at a store like Walmart? Or book bindings?
I have no idea. All of the things I was considering guessing have already been guessed.
October 2nd, 2008 at 7:45 am
Oh, this is just delicious! Wrong, wrong, no, not close, nope, good try, and thanks for playing but no!
When D saw the post this morning she called downstairs, “Oh for goodness’ sake, that’s impossible! Give them a clue already!”
So here it is.
Clue 1: Click on the image so that the larger version opens up. Look at it real closely. Detail is everything.
Clue 2: It’s a tool used in construction.
Clue 3: I rotated the image.
October 2nd, 2008 at 8:22 am
Lame guess > One of those folding ruler things
Clue 1: Click on the image so that the larger version opens up. Look at it real closely. Detail is everything.
Me: I rotated it and colorized it. Reduced it and enlarged it. There ain’t much detail.
Clue 2: It’s a tool used in construction.
Me: I am not a construction worker. What do I know about their tools.
Clue 3: I rotated the image.
Me: I rotated it and colorized it. Reduced it and enlarged it. There ain’t much detail.
My head hurts. I am going back to bed.
October 2nd, 2008 at 8:58 am
DL–> Oh man, I love your determination. Rotating, colorizing, reducing, enlarging. Flashes of CSI: Criminal Investigation. Next thing I know you’ll be examining the photo for blood splatter! You do NOT need to know construction to know this tool. And the detail…well….it’s vague but it’s there. Okay, another clue. Get your finger on the buzzer.
Clue 4: Detail is everything. Context is everything.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:15 am
Well miss Anita, the only guess I can come up with is the tracks on a bulldozer or big equipment. p.s. me thinks you are enjoying our frustration a wee bit
I have been staring at this photo all day.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:46 am
Dang, now you got me playing…I’m guessing skid plate on an electric saw.
October 2nd, 2008 at 9:51 am
Kelly–> Oh golly gee, I’m ever so sorry but your answer is WRONG! And seriously, how could you even suggest that I’d enjoy seeing any of you become frustrated and fixated by this little contest? Where would the grace, love and compassion be in that??!! :::::she said, rubbing her hands together in diabolical glee:::::
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:31 am
a row of levels
October 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 am
Janet and Eliz–>So glad to have you join in this game of Anita Stumps The Lesbians and Their Friends. Liz, I don’t know what a skid plate is and consider it great wisdom to never get within close proximity to any saw, let alone one that is electrically powered!
Let me give my last clue again. This time in bold print.
Details are everything. Context is everything.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:07 am
Anita said: ‘I don’t know what a skid plate is and consider it great wisdom to never get within close proximity to any saw, let alone one that is electrically powered!’
What kind of lesbian are you?…
If Tim Allen was a girl he’d be my counterpart, except I don’t usually hurt myself bad enough for hospital visits.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:07 am
Y’know, I did look at the large jpg last night (with attention to details) and… did you use a pinhole camera for this shot, or else do a bit of framing with Photoshop or some such?
It *does* look like it’s made of metal, with rust spots. But the view is highly abstract… which is what’s defeating me re. context. Am sure I’ve got plenty of company there!
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:14 am
It’s THE GINGERBREAD FORMS!
Construction, right?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:17 am
The concrete barriers, used to protect and block traffic at construction sites?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:19 am
Second guess is cinder (sp?) blocks
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:27 am
E2tc –>Wow girlfriend, you were really thinking and yes, I did do a little framing effect on the image and then converted it to black and white but that’s it. No rust though.
Joyce–> Concrete. Close but no cigar.
And the straight girl with the emphatic asterisk wins! YES! It was the gingerbread forms I wrote about a little more than a week ago. As I said “context is everything!” Congratulations to Lindsay who will be receiving some old classics (i.e. outdated in a couple cases but fun nonetheless!) Lindsay, drop me an email with your mailing address and the box will be on its way!
Wow. This was so fun (torturing you all that is) that I’m definitely going to be doing it again in the future.
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:29 am
okay..if I can’t guess, maybe I will help someone who knows a little more of tools… my guess is that it is a tool used for detailing wood….. thus the construction / context / detail clues..?????
Just don’t have a clue of a name… and who knows, I may not even be playing in the same ball park…
So how many times have we looked at this picture today..? I have looked so much that I swear it is looking back at me, it breathes for sure…!!!!
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:41 am
Ripley–> Ah, so I have to thank for the higher than normal blog visitor stats for this time of the day huh?
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:42 am
anita ->Well, I was a studio art major back in the day, and the pic reminded me of some of Aaron Siskind’s abstract photos of walls, graffiti, etc.
Now that you’ve put us through this !!!!
), I’d love to see the shot you took this detail from. The texture of the “slats” had me hornswoggled, as they don’t really look like they’re metal per se… but those “rust spots” are deceiving. ;(
October 2nd, 2008 at 11:43 am
Gah! Forgot proper closing tag for URL, and also meant
at end of my final sentence…
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
Anita, You probably got 1,000 hits today and 900 of them were me. That had me so stumped that it isn’t funny. I almost emailed the picture to my brother to see if he knew what it was. Well I’m glad you enjoyed your day of Stump the lesbians and their friends.
I on the other hand must go get some work done now that I can stop looking at that durn picture.
October 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I just knew last night it had something to do with the gingerbread houses but my Lisa my partner blew it up and distorted it and told me it had to be cement~Teach me not to listen to her again!
October 2nd, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I will be gone for a few days but can we do this again Monday? That was fun!
Go Lindsey!
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Ah phooey. I went and missed all the fun. Poop.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:45 pm
I’m with Stephanie on wanting a repeat challenge… this was a lot of fun!
October 3rd, 2008 at 9:58 am
Lindsey’s package just went out in the mail so again, congrats! As to doing this again, absolutely! I won’t commit to a Mystery Photo every week but for now I think every other week is manageable. I’m really glad you all had fun with it!
October 3rd, 2008 at 12:09 pm
I think you had a lot of fun torturing us as well;) I heard that diabolical laughter all the way here.
October 3rd, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Kelly–>I think the fact that I spent so much time online checking everyone’s guesses rather than applying myself to the home and church chores I intended to do pretty well showed my hand.
October 4th, 2008 at 9:25 am
October 6th, 2008 at 9:54 am
47 replies? Sheesh, is this a record? Wait, now this one makes 48! Do I hear 50?
October 6th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Bon–> Leave it to the Lezzie’s (and friends) to turn out and shout for a prize! I’ve now learned the secret to successful blogging. Who knew a couple old books and a macro photo would do the trick?!
October 7th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Anita, you forgot the last part of successful blogging…keep them scratching their heads so they HAVE to come back to see IF anyone finally got it figured out!
October 10th, 2008 at 4:13 am
Hey what was the bonus mystery prize?
October 10th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
DragonLady–>Animal crackers and Gummy Bears!
October 10th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Well they aren’t as good as Peeps but they do run in the top 50 I think. My little friend Mari swears that gummy worms are better than the gummy bears though.
October 10th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
DragonLady–> I hear ya. Peeps rock! As it was though I happened to have a truckload of gummies and frosted crackers in the house (for the church kids, not us). It was either throw those in as the surprise or the leftover grilled chicken in the back of the fridge.
