Peek Sneak on Sunday

Date February 12, 2009

My favorite five minutes of every week are leading the children’s sermon on Sunday mornings. Reading the liturgical text for the week and then finding a way to communicate the heart of it to the children helps me in my own faith. I’m all for exegetical dissection, theological reflection, and thoughtful consideration of brilliant theologians and scholars but sometimes you just need to step back and ponder the simple awesomeness of love, faith, grace, God and all that great stuff that keeps our hearts beating with passion and hope.

This Sunday I’m going to bypass the lectionary readings in favor of a belated by one day Valentine’s focus for my scruffy brood of knee-high sweeties. The lesson is simple. I’ll reach into a big Valentine’s gift bag and remove one little chocolate kiss. I’ll tell them how I wanted to give them a little something for Valentine’s but want to be sure it’s okay with their parents if I give them a chocolate kiss. As I hold up the kiss between my thumb and index finger I’ll ask the parents permission and knowing they can’t say no to me (who can?) I’ll reach back into the bag and remove a jumbo 7-ounce kiss for each of the children. I predict laughter from the adults, resigned acceptance from the parents, giggly delight from the kids, and how much fun for me!

By now you already know where this object lesson is going. God’s love always surprises us because however much we imagine God loves us, God’s love for us is bigger still.

If you know it, sing it . . .

God’s love has no limits, God’s grace has no measure,
God’s power has no boundaries known unto man.

For out of God’s infinite riches in Jesus,
God giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.
