Same Sex Lip Lock

Date April 15, 2009

I haven’t blogged since Easter Sunday as I’ve been in a perpetual state of napping for the past three days after all the Holy Week hoopla. It took Jesus three days to rise from the dead. It’s taken me three days longer to get off the couch. There’s a sad little commentary.

So for those of you who didn’t have it marked in your official queer appointment book, along with being Tax Day, today was designated as Same Sex Kiss Day. Leave it to the gays to come up with a political action that involves lip locking! Yet another reason to embrace being queer. So here’s the idea as I understand it. Tax Day is yet another occasion in a series of many when queers are reminded that they aren’t recognized as equal to everyone else. We pay the same taxes and yet we can’t file jointly at the federal level because our marriages aren’t recognized as legal and our relationships aren’t recognized as valid. So the idea with Same Sex Kiss Day is that gay couples make themselves a visible presence on this day when their relationships are invisible to the government by kissing in public at one of the 3523 Starbucks conveniently located within three miles of their home or place of work.

I’ll admit I originally thought it was a pretty goofy idea and to be honest D and I aren’t big fans of anyone, gay or straight, smacking lips or playing touchy-touchy in public. That’s not to say we shy away from holding hands in public but as a general rule exchanging saliva falls under the “save it for home” category, but then again, who am I to say no to kissing my beloved so I signed us up on the designated Facebook page and early this afternoon we headed off to Starbucks. On the way I couldn’t help but tease D by asking if it was okay if I dipped her when I kissed her. This got me nothing but a slightly exasperated “Just order me my usual. I think I’ll wait in the car.” After I assured her there would be no dips or inappropriate grips we arrived at Starbucks and placed our order. After returning my well-worn Starbucks Gold Card to my wallet I informed the Barista it was Same Sex Kiss Day (Did anyone think to inform Hallmark?) and asked if she’d be willing to take our photo; visual documentation that D and I committed an ever-so gay PDA in Starbucks.

The photo of us kissing was enthusiastically taken by the aforementioned Starbuckean worker bee but don’t bother looking for it in this post since D and I realized the moment we reviewed the image on the camera’s digital playback that kissing isn’t the most complimentary pose for being photographed. Can you say double-chin? Anyway, mission accomplished!
