OK, I can’t resist – Dorothy Love Coates & the Gospel Harmonettes performing the song that inspired the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love.” But their song is called “You Can’t Hurry God” (because he’s right on time!)

anita- > well, that’s my music geek self showing. I 1st found out about her in the pre-CD era, from browsing in a record store, and fell in love with her guitar playing and many of her songs. (BTW, there are lots more TV clips of *great* gospel artists on YouTube – you might enjoy kicking around over there, following some of the “related video” links.)

anita -> Well, my music geek self is showing! I found out about Rosetta Tharpe, from browsing through the gospel section in a record store, back when all we had were LPs. And I fell in love with her guitar playing, and with many of her songs. (I’ve got more gospel on my blog, too – and there are some *marvelous* clips of gospel singer from the 50s and 60s on YouTube, so you might want to poke around a bit more.)

So for now, here’s the truly amazing Dorothy Love Coates and her Original Gospel Harmonettes. Enjoy!

Oh, Rosetta Tharpe is the bomb! And this is one of my fave songs by her (originally recorded as a duet with singer Marie Knight). Rosetta was an incredible guitarist – I’ve sometimes wondered if chuck Berry stole some licks – and maybe his duck walk move – from her.
