I can well understand that, because I’ve realised through meeting more GLBT folk, just how appallingly they are often treated – even by their own families – and am sometimes ashamed of my fellow humankind. My other son has red hair, and to me my boys’ different sexualities are nothing more than their different hair colours: part of what makes them the delightful individuals that they are.

I can tell you in all honesty that those were almost my very words when my son told me he was gay. Of course I’d known for ages but was waiting for him to tell me.
