We Need a Play Break!

Date November 17, 2008

After a month of volunteering to defeat Prop 8, grieving the passage of Prop 8, and of active engagement in protesting Prop 8, it’s time to bring life back in balance. The push for equality will continue on but so must the rest of life, and I don’t know about you but I forgot that just about anything else existed until D reminded me it was time to clean out the cat litter box and normal life came hurling right back into view.

So what say we jump back into ordinary life with a little fun! I have two gifts to give away.

The first prize is a new copy of The Ragamuffin Gospel: Visual Edition. This isn’t the full text version but instead communicates the heart of Manning’s message through powerful graphics and images. It’s incredibly beautiful and inspiring and if don’t win the prize then just chick here and order a copy.

And since I’m going to be doing some upcoming blogging on “The Ragamuffin Gospel” if you haven’t yet read the original, then you can either click here to order a copy from Amazon or purchase it in e-book form here. I’m not a huge e-book fan because I love the rush of holding a book in my hands (don’t even get me started on the sweet smell of the paper) but the e-book is mighty fine for adding quick bookmarker notes.

The second prize is the new release of Sara Groves Christmas CD, “O Holy Night.” I just downloaded it from iTunes the other night and love it. It’s mostly classical Christmas Carols with a Sara twist. Mellow and awesome. Should you win you can choose to receive it as a CD through the mail or as a digital download.

And while you’re thinking Christmas I want to invite you to take a minute and enjoy the embedded video from Advent Conspiracy which is something I’m personally committing myself to participate in this coming Advent season; to worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all. That’s enough to keep us all busy until Christmas Day, don’t you think?

After the advent break I’ll tell you how you can win one of the two prizes, but for now, turn up your sound and enjoy.

Okay, I know you’re chomping at the bits to know what the contest is so without further adieu, all you need to do is come up with an original slogan for one of the signs in the photograph below. The slogan can be reflective of your faith. It can communicate a poignant, personal, or funny message. It just can’t be directed at any individual or group in a disrespect or mean-spirited manner. I’ll post all entries in the comments section and later this week I’ll select the top five (in my opinion) and then ask you all to vote on your top two choices which will determiner the winners.

Oh. Wait. I forgot to mention something.

The signs are not from a Prop 8 protest.

*The signs are from a demonstration where gay activists and their straight allies marched in a global effort to demand that M&M’s be licensed as the official candy of the international GLBTQ community, and so that’s what your entries should reflect.

In other words, have fun with this!!!

*This is a fictious storyline and any resemblance to actual events is merely a fantasy of your easily impressionable mind.

Yea, those cat litter boxes really have a way of bringing you back to reality. Don’t they? Not my favorite task either. :) No matter what Prop 8 says, marriage is in the heart and no one can take that away from us. They haven’t won by a long shot. I just keep telling myself this…. as I wonder what rights and protections my future wife and I will or will not have on the books when that day comes. I wish that those who Voted for Prop 8 (oh sorry, I mean against licensing M&M’s) and all similar measures would have an epiphany… or something.

Hmm… So I guess that “NO HATE NO EIGHT” sign is a total coincidence? *smirks*

As for slogans, the only thing that comes to mind is: “Liberté. Egalité. Chocolaté.”

Now, if it were Skittles, that would open itself to all sorts of groan-worthy rainbow puns. Which is of course where my brain is at the moment. If I think of anything better, I’ll let you know.

Laurie–>For a real sign for equality, I love it.

Katherine–>Litter boxes and weed pulling. Snap you back everytime! And I agree Katherine, while we continue to push forward for full equality under the law, as one gay couple at the Prop 8 rally told me, “They only way they’ll dissolve our marriage is if they pry our wedding rings off our dead fingers.” Marriage as a spiritual union before God can never be taken from us and in time, neither will our legal marriages.

Marta–>Hey girl, go with the rainbow puns! Here in the States we can buy M&M’s in separate colors and make our own rainbow so have at it! Is that Freedom! Equality! Chocolate!? How much do I love that. Would not the world be a perfect place if everyone had all three?

  5. marta said:

That was my attempt at a play on the French Revolution catchphrase, “Liberté. Egalité. Fraternité.” And yep, it translates as Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. I don’t know what the French word for chocolate is, but it struck me for some reason that it looked too much like the other two to pass up the opportunity. (Why, yes, I am a geek…) I’m American, btw, but it’s an easy mistake to make with me spouting off semi-obscure French humor.

And you are so right about how the world would be better with all three. This talk is making me hungry. :-)

Marta–>Now see, you’ve just exposed my complete lack of knowledge concerning French history. And take it a notch further, now I’ve confused you with one of the other women who is from France. Je suis un imbécile! However, I do know that the French word for chocolate is indeed chocolat, which I only know because the movie of the same name is one of my favorites.

lol OK gonna have to think about this one.. I love Sara Groves!!!

  8. joni said:

Here’s my sign…. (made with an amazing colourful display)

“It’s not the exterior colour… it’s the inside that you fancy” then on the other side it would say, “We are all the same chocolate inside”.

    *lol* No chocolate, no peace!

“Gay People: many colors, hard shells, sweet centers. Nuts sometimes included!”

  13. anita said:

Eliz–> LOL. Yeh, I kind of threw the details of the contest in there at the very end. Now come on, you can think of something!

  14. Amy said:

umm…can we have a deadline, por favor?

  15. DL said:

Had you chosen PeePs I might could have come up with someting but all I can think of is “We wanna taste the rainbow” Which could be considered tasteless to vulgar minded people.

  16. Susan said:

Okay, I’ll go with a rainbow slogan: Rainbow Candy for a Rainbow World!

  17. Tiff said:

    “We’re here! We’re queer! And we’re hungry!”

  18. anita said:

SF’s –> Okay, I’m smiling over these. A couple even elicited guffaws.

Amy–> Let’s say Thursday afternoonish sometime. Does that work with your schedule?? :)

“Stop Eating my rainbow” side one

    “Embrace the chocolate” side 2

  22. joni said:

oh Steph, I like that second one!!

  23. Amy said:

i wanted a funny one but couldn’t think of one. nothing original at least. maybe something like: hate is past, hope is now, equality will be.

  24. Amy said:

oops..i just realized this is supposed to be about m&m’s and the glbt community. i’ll give that connection a try.

  25. annie said:

i’m new to this site, which was recommended by a friend. what a fun game! let’s see if i can come up with something stellar…..

“Please Help Me Find My Shoes”
    “ET, Phone M&M”
“Underarm Deodorant Is A Good Thing”
    “M&Ms R Multi, Too”
    “GLBT + M&M = Love”

sorry if they’re terrible, it was a spur-of-the moment thing!

  26. Amy said:

responding to the offical m&m slogan “there’s an ‘m’ in everyone. find yours…” :

i’ve found the ‘m’ in me! “ms. & ms.”

  27. Bon said:

Stephanie! LOL!! (the ‘divided, we’re letters’ part reminds me of a saying from that great sage, Eeyore. “To the uneducated, A is just three sticks.”)

…and random thought…anyone ever notice how, though it might be GLBT or LGBT it’s never GBLT? Like what, a gay BLT? Make mine with dijon. Sorry, but the ‘letters’ comment diverted me.

    Okay, Anita, hows about:

red and yellow, orange and green:
chocolate for each dyke and queen!

(I’ve already spent far too much time trying to find another idea, so maybe I’d better stop there and leave the ad work to those not on deadline for other, less entertaining projects. Alas.)

  28. anita said:

Okay People, these are GREAT!!! PLEASE come back on Friday as I’ll have a post with the top 5 entries for you to vote on! How fun!

  29. Stephanie said:

    Bon-

    Joni-

Thanks! That wasn’t so easy, Anita picked a challenging game!

Bon, you have a way with words. Stephanie! LOL!! (the ‘divided, we’re letters’ part reminds me of a saying from that great sage, Eeyore. “To the uneducated, A is just three sticks.”) Eeyore is still my favorite. :)
    I know I don’t get a vote, but I really love Stephanies’
    GLBTM&M
    United we’re sweeter.
    Divided we’re letters.
Awesome game Anita, thank you. Sorry that the I was not on the ball for this one.
