Department of Education Receives $ 1.8 Million for Mental Health Program | West Virginia News
CHARLESTON, Va. (AP) – The West Virginia Department of Education’s program to educate young people about mental health and train school staff to respond to it has received a $ 1.8 million government grant federal.
The award was announced Tuesday by US Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia.
The AWARE project, or Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education, also aims to train teachers and school staff to detect and respond to mental health issues and to connect young people affected by behavioral health issues with needed services, have Manchin and Capito said in a press release.
The award comes from the Mental Health and Addiction Services Administration of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
“It is extremely important to increase awareness of mental health and behavioral health issues, especially among West Virginia youth,” Manchin said.
“While the pandemic has highlighted the importance of these services, we cannot forget the young people of West Virginia who are exposed to adverse childhood experiences in their daily lives,” said Capito.
