Friends of Silvermont need mulch, volunteers | Lifestyles

The Friends of Silvermont (FOS) continue their efforts to beautify the grounds of Silvermont Park and Mansion in Brevard. Some of these efforts are monthly drop dead and cleanup days held on the first Saturday of each month. On Saturday, April 2, the scheduled Dead Fall and Clean-up Day will be spent spreading mulch over much of the area around the Silvermont parking lot. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon to help clean mulch beds and spread mulch piles. Volunteers are encouraged to bring wheelbarrows, rakes and shovels/forks if they have them. In addition, tools will be available on site. Volunteers should come whenever it suits their schedule within the scheduled effort from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Depending on the weather and the progress of April 2, a second “Mulch Day” is tentatively scheduled for April 9 at the same time in the morning. If volunteers cannot make it on April 2, there will be other opportunities later in the month.

FOS worked closely with Transylvania County Parks and Recreation Manager Jared Mull and Operations Manager Chad Owenby to coordinate major improvements to the condition of the grounds at Silvermont Park. According to Friends of Silvermont president Erik Rasmussen, “Chad Owenby has been a great advocate for our efforts. Last year and this year he made sure we received the mulch we requested to improve the appearance of the flower beds at the front of the park. Jared Mull and TC Parks and Recreation coordinated with us all of our landscape and mansion improvement efforts and often provided volunteers to assist us. Brenda Skeffington, Recreation Programmer at Silvermont, is a tireless advocate for Silvermont Park. Brenda continually walks the grounds, tidies up, identifies areas for improvement and takes on small projects on her own. The community is really lucky to have it working there. This close coordination with the county means that the efforts undertaken meet the current needs of the county and feed into future plans. Additionally, FOS can continue to serve as the community’s voice to the county, which is part of our charter as a volunteer-based organization.

There are many ways for volunteers to help maintain and improve Silvermont in addition to the monthly Dead Fall Days. If you are interested in volunteering, please join FOS on Saturday April 2 or contact Rasmussen at [email protected] Friends of Silvermont is a 501©(3) non-profit organization.
