Local Rotary club holding a day of service

TORRINGTON — Members of the Rotary Clube of Torrington-Winsted are hosting the Rotary Rally for Relief: 2022-Stock the Shelves, joining club members from Connecticut and Massachusetts for a day of service April 9.

Members participating in Rotary Day of Service collect clothing for the homeless, renovate parks, build shelters and other community-related activities.

Club Members, High School Interact Club Members, and Torrington Library Teen Advisory Members have already signed up to collect food and personal supply donations at Super Foodtown in New Hartford, and Walmart and Market 32 ​​​​on East Main Street, Torrington.


Food and supplies will be distributed to six local food banks: The Pantry, Friendly Hands Food Bank and Salvation Army Food Bank in Torrington; as well as the Salvation Army Food Bank in Winsted, Hands of Grace in New Hartford and the Community Food Bank in Barkhamsted. Collectively, these food banks have seen their donations drop by 100,000 items a year over the past two years, according to a statement.

“With the participation of clubs from across the state of Connecticut, as well as Western Massachusetts, Day of Service is an unprecedented effort by Rotary to improve the lives of individuals and families in the communities they serve. “, said the members.

“Rotarians are known for their tireless efforts to help those in need, but the Day of Service will be the largest volunteer initiative we’ve ever held in our area,” said District 7890 Governor Joanne Alfieri, who oversees 57 clubs in northern Connecticut and western Massachusetts.

“Literally, every community in our state will be affected by what happens on April 9,” added Jeff Krause, governor of Rotary District 7980, which oversees 63 clubs in southern Connecticut. “From building homes for Habitat for Humanity in Norwich to painting a primary school in Meriden, our projects will make a difference where help is needed most.”
