Springfield-Greene Co. health department reports more than 500 new COVID-19 since early July amid rising hospitalizations


SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Springfield-Greene County Health Department has reported more than 500 new cases of COVID-19 since the start of the new month.

Health officials are reporting 519 new cases since July 1, more than two-thirds of those in the past three days.

The number of cases in the last four days includes:

  • July 1, 157
  • July 2: 50
  • July 3: 262
  • July 4: 50

The seven-day moving average is around 144 cases per day, according to the Department of Health.

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to hit southwest Missouri hard. Mercy Springfield is currently treating 115 patients for COVID-19, and the hospital recently announced it was running low on ventilators.

Various communities in southwestern Missouri have reported a high number of hospitalizations for COVID-19 and an increase in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant. The health department says there are currently 168 COVID-19 patients being treated at hospitals in Greene County.

The health department is currently reporting nearly 2,400 active cases of COVID-19. Less than 40% of Greene County residents are vaccinated, according to county records.
