Teen Mom OG’s Amber Portwood loses custody of son James to Andrew

After three years of litigation, Amber Portwood lost custody of his 4-year-old son, James, who will move from Indiana to California with his father, Andrew Glennon.

The OG teen mom the star’s ex was granted primary legal and physical custody of her child, according to court documents obtained by The sun. Glennon, 38, is also allowed to move James from Indiana – where Portwood, 32, lives – to Glennon’s home state of California. Along with the ruling, the judge advised the videographer to “seek and consider the mother’s opinion before making any major decisions regarding the medical treatment, upbringing and religion of the child”.

The ruling ends the child custody battle between the MTV star and his ex, which began shortly after Portwood – who is also mum to Leah, 13, with her ex Gary Shirley – was arrested for domestic battery after allegedly wielding a machete in Glennon on the July 4, 2019 weekend.

According to Marion Superior Court documents obtained by Radar Online at the time, “[Amber] struck the machete over and into a doorway, while Andrew Glennon was standing directly on the other side of the doorway, this created a substantial risk of bodily harm to Andrew Glennon.

Ashley’s Reality Roundup obtained an affidavit of the incident, which alleged Portwood hit Glennon with a shoe while holding James, who was 14 months old at the time.

“Mr Glennon said that as he entered the house, Ms Portwood grabbed a shoe from the shoe rack and hit him with it. Mr Glennon said he was holding [the baby] and he turned to the side to avoid [the baby] getting hit with the shoe,” the affidavit reads. “Mr Glennon said he then left [the house] again with [the baby].”

Portwood was arrested and later pleaded guilty to two counts of domestic assault and intimidation, according to the Indy Star.

While Portwood and Shirley share custody of their daughter, Leah lives full-time with her father, stepmother Kristina Shirley and half-sister, Emilee. On the 2021 season of the MTV hit, viewers watched the teenager explain why she didn’t feel comfortable speaking with her mother, who she considered an absent parent.

“All she did was give birth to me and then leave,” Leah said in one episode.

The Indiana native, who has been candid about her mental health struggles, has had her fair share of legal drama in the past. In addition to pleading guilty to two domestic assault charges during a 2011 incident with Gary, Portwood served 17 months in prison after violating probation in his drug possession case.

The 16 and pregnant alum detailed his mental health diagnoses and addiction issues on OG teen momon social media and in his memoirs over the years.

“I have really awful anger issues because I’m bipolar and borderline, which is no excuse, but at the time I didn’t know that, so I didn’t really take care of myself or understand not really why I was feeling certain emotions,” she revealed on the “Dopey” podcast in 2018, revealing that her fierce partying led her to get into violent altercations, while TV money -reality made her easy prey for drug traffickers.

“When you make a lot of money, there’s more drugs,” the mother-of-two said at the time. “Whenever a drug dealer had a new stash, whatever, they would call me first because they knew I would buy everything [stash], because I had the money to do it. It never helps.

Four years later, however, Portwood appears to be in a much healthier place, releasing her second memoir, So are you crazy too?in February – and on Instagram Live shortly after the news of the police custody broke to discuss the importance of breaking the stigma around mental health.
