Winter sports can start playing games on Friday, RIIL announces
PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) – The Rhode Island Interschool League (RIIL) announced on Wednesday that winter sports could begin competing later this week.
The league said it was given the green light to allow the following low and moderate risk sports to start playing on Friday, Jan.22: basketball, hockey, indoor athletics, gymnastics and swimming.
Although these teams have been able to train, the competition has been suspended since December.
“While we are grateful to receive permission from the State of Rhode Island and that everyone is looking forward to playing, we also recognize that each member school and our official associations will need time to adjust the schedule and put in place. implement the new guidelines before holding any competitions, ”said the RIIL statement.
The state updated its Phase III referrals for youth and adult sports, which strongly encourages players to stay in stable groups, wear a face mask at all times, and get tested at least once a week.
Routine testing will help quickly identify student-athletes who are positive for COVID-19, isolate them, and notify their close contacts to prevent the spread of the virus.
In addition, each winter sports team must have completed the required number of practices before its first competition.
RIIL also encouraged each member school to take the necessary time to ensure they are ready to host events.
