Women’s No. 18 advances at ITA weekend kickoff

Tallahassee, Florida – 18and-FSU ranked women’s tennis qualified for the winners group at the ITA Kickoff Weekend region in Tallahassee on Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles beat Illinois 4-3 and will now face the winner of No. 19 Florida and FIU on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The win moved FSU to a perfect 3-0 on the season.

Starting 1-0 in doubles for the third game in a row due to player availability, FSU once again did what it took to take the point and take a 1-0 lead. Vic Allen and Kianah Motosono emerged first on court two with a 6-2 win. With the score tied, it was up to Petra Hule and Lesedi Jacobs to put the Noles ahead and the pair did just that as they improved to 3-0 as a team with a 6-4 win at ground one to take the lead. point.

“The team did such a mature job in the doubles to start the game and came out on fire,” FSU head coach Jen Hyde said. “We had big leads on courts one and two and having to forfeit court three is an added pressure, but they still handled the situation very well. It was essential to be able to come back to 1-1 before the singles. »

FSU entered the singles tied 1-1 after having to give up a run in the sixth row. Hule came out first, putting the Seminoles ahead 2-0. The 6-4, 7-5 win took the senior to 3-0 in doubles this season. Allen moved FSU within a point of victory as they won in straight sets on court four 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Illinois then pushed FSU in the third sets on the last three courts and eventually tied the game at 3-3, but senior transfer Kianah Motosono recorded the clear win by winning their match 7-5, 4-6 , 6-3.

“We had a couple outstanding performances today and some other performances that we need to improve on, but the great thing is that we can come back tomorrow and work on that,” Hyde said. “The fight was good given where we are in the season. We have to keep growing, we have to keep improving, we have to keep taking advantage of the opportunities that come our way and we will. It’s just a matter of hitting our stride and we’re getting there slowly. It’s a great start against a very good and competitive team from Illinois.

“We said at the end of the week there would be no apologies. No matter how many we have, we have the group to do it. Kudos to Vic for stepping in after finding out she was going to play singles last night. She stepped up and took care of things in straight sets. It was a huge effort on his part. Petra was solid in one spot. She went through some demons in the second set and was so poised and mature when it mattered most and Kianah down. Both girls were after it and had cramps because she was just a little harder today. It made a huge difference and it’s great that she was able to get her first clinch as Nole.

The Seminoles are back in action on Sunday as the ITA kickoff weekend continues. FSU will play Florida or FIU on Sunday at 2:00 a.m. The venue for the match is expected to be at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center unless there is a change in the forecast for Sunday’s temperatures.
